Research Rules & Regulations

What ETSU rules and regulations apply to my Undergraduate Research?

First, remember that you’ll need to follow all the appropriate rules of the ETSU department in which you are working for your degree and/or for your project. Then, the same rules and regulations that govern faculty research also apply to your Undergraduate Research experience. Your Faculty Mentor will help you!

Second, make sure that you are aware of the ETSU guidelines and information concerned with Ethics in Research.

Now, depending on your research topic, there may be specific guidelines and regulations that are important. Such as

  • If your research involves people, you’ll need to be trained in the university and federal rules that govern Human Subjects Research and your project will require approval by the ETSU Institutional Review Board.
  • If you research involves animals, you’ll need to be trained in the rules that govern use of animals in research and your project will require approval by the ETSU Animal Care Committee.
  • If you are working with vertebrate animals, also be aware of the policies for Occupational Health and Safety.
  • If you research is in science and you are dealing with hazardous materials in any form, you’ll need to check with our Radiation Safety program.

Visit these websites to learn more, but remember to talk with your Faculty Mentor.
