First, if you think you might be interested in participating in undergraduate research during your career here at ETSU, you need to start EARLY.

• Bring up the idea with your advisor your very first semester.
• In most areas of study, talking with a professor during your sophomore year is a great first step.
• Browse the Research & Creative Opportunities database for  undergraduate research opportunities.
• You might want to consider a Research Discovery position
• But even if you’re a junior, go ahead and talk with a professor about the possibility.

If you’re NOT SURE….then you have a lot of options about how to find out more about doing research as an undergraduate. But again, you need to start EARLY. Here are some options for learning more about undergraduate research:

• Seek out a professor and volunteer to help out in their laboratory, studio, or assist them with library research.
• Find a work-study or other student worker position in a department that represents your area of interest.
• Discover if there is a student organization in your area of interest and attend a meeting or two.
• Find our whether seminars or journal clubs are offered and attend.
• Go to student performances and exhibits on campus and talk to those students to find out about their experiences.
• Attend university lectures and pay attention to who attends, then find them and have a conversation.
