Harold
Zimmerman was born in suburban Philadelphia and grew
up in Pennsylvania and the Connecticut suburbs of
New York City. Desiring an education close to the
sea, he attended college on Long Island, NY at Stony
Brook University, where he majored in English and
Art History. He eventually ventured inland and
received an M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Indiana
University Bloomington. Before coming to ETSU,
Harold spent two years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in
the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford
University.
Harold's interests are many and varied. While he is
trained as a literary critic, linguist, and
historian of the European Middle Ages, most
specifically Anglo-Saxon England, he is not as
ponderous as that training might make him sound.
Over the last ten years, he has taught college
courses on subjects as varied as Greek and Roman
poetry, journalism and punditry, the plays of
Shakespeare, transatlantic Modernism, 20th-century
fiction, and the concept of truthiness in modern
society. He has written on subjects as diverse as
medieval politics, silent film, saintly
missionaries, poetics, insult battles, royal
genealogies, and the Iraq war. He enjoys variety,
contemporary fiction, low-brow art, beast epics, and
trashy sci-fi.
