Function of Position

Responsible to the Director of the Student Health Clinic for evaluating and treating student health complaints following nursing protocols; ensuring the scientific application of the principles of nursing science, patient safety, and patient teaching; utilizing nursing skills in health promotion, disease prevention and restoration of health; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

-Evaluates and provides nursing assessment of health problems of students to determine appropriate level of care needed.

-Provides treatment for selected health problems under nursing protocol.

-Documents assessment and care in health record.

-Refers patients needing care by nurse practitioner or physician; schedules appointments as needed.

-Assists nurse practitioner/physician with examinations, procedures, dispensing medications and patient teaching.

-Assists with patient follow-up, contacting patients about findings of laboratory and other investigations, need for additional care, etc.

-Administers injections including immunizations and insures appropriate patient screening, teaching and observation following injection.

-Counsels patients regarding their health risks, health problems, treatment options and appropriate use of the health care system.

-Provides appropriate first aid and life support to patients undergoing medical emergency.

-Performs lab tests offered in clinic.

-Assists with maintenance of inventory of lab supplies and performance of required quality control tests and controls.

-Assists in planning and operating women's/men's health programs including evaluating patient history, assisting with exams for contraception and sexually transmitted diseases, documentation and follow-up.

-Performs non-complex physical examinations required to meet requirements of the university's academic departments; refers to nurse practitioner/physician when abnormal findings are noted.

-Educates students regarding promotion of health and prevention of illness including sexually transmitted diseases, family planning/contraception, nutrition and health related behaviors.

-Operates allergy injection clinic to including scheduling and administration of injections, ensuring adequacy of supplies for emergency response, consultation with allergists, maintenance of records, post-injection evaluation and proper storage of allergy medications.

-Maintains emergency kit to insure currency of medications and equipment.

-Maintains OSHA and CLIA standards.

-Supports the learning and practice of students of the College of Nursing and other departments of the Division of Health Sciences.

-Schedules appointments for nurse practitioners and physicians in clinic; arranges referral for care outside clinic.

-Presents lectures and other learning activities to student groups as requested on a variety of health care topics.

Secondary Functions

-Attends office meetings and in-service programs.

-Represents department as assigned on university and community committees.

-Maintains competence for the practice of nursing.

-Assists in reviewing nursing protocols.

-Assists with quality improvement efforts.

-Assists with inventory of medications and supplies.

-Packages and labels medications as needed.

-Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

-Knowledge of advanced nursing skills and techniques.

-Knowledge of current developments in health related areas.

-Knowledge of university policies and procedures.

-Ability to work independently and make decisions regarding patient care.

-Ability to operate equipment to include computer, autoclave, centrifuge, microscope, cash register, blood pressure units, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, electric thermometers, etc.

-Ability to communicate effectively with university personnel at various levels, students, parents, representatives of the community and medical community.

-Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient records.

-Ability to keep records and reports.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in nursing and Tennessee licensure as an RN required; one year of clinical nursing experience required, preferably in ambulatory care.
