Position Title: Coordinator of Student Advisement Services

Function of Position

Responsible to the Dean of the College of Education (COE) for developing advisement strategies and coordinating a coherent advisement program for all College of Education undergraduates majors, as well as coordination of advisement for secondary teacher licensure students whose majors are not in the College of Education, including supervision of staff; developing articulation agreements with community colleges in and out-of-state in concert with the Associate Dean for Articulated Programs; providing advisement structures for off-campus cohorts and 2+2 programs with regional community colleges; serve as a liaison between the COE and other ETSU departments regarding teacher licensure requirements; plan and coordinate orientation programs and undergraduate registration; coordinate and perform recruitment activities; provide academic advising to all undergraduate students pursuing teacher licensure, both in the College of Education and other colleges; provide program information and admission requirements to graduate students; and determine student eligibility for admission to teacher education.

Essential Functions

- Determines appropriate staffing for advisement services.
- Advises Dean on all undergraduate student service issues, including recruitment, advisement, and retention.
- Provides supervision for Graduate Assistant Advisors and Advisor; develops work plan for staff.
- Develops recruitment and advisement protocols with community colleges.
- Works with the Director of Technology to develop and maintain student services system.
- Serves as a representative for Dean for off-campus cohorts.
- Confers with COE Department Chairs and Program Coordinators to facilitate the offering of courses.
- Coordinates communication between advisement staff and COE support staff.
- Updates COE support staff with current and/or upcoming advisement information/dates for dissemination to students.
- Liaison with program coordinators to maintain current program check sheets, course requirements, and program changes for dissemination to advisement staff and students.
- Coordinates with other campus academic programs to support teacher licensure programs.
- Develops and maintains relationships with community colleges and school systems to foster program growth.
- Develops community college articulation agreements in collaboration with the Dean of the College of Education.
- Develops plans for 2+2 programs at regional community colleges working with Department Chairs and Dean.
- Identifies need for program offerings with the Dean and Associate Dean of the College of Education.
- Makes arrangements with instructors to provide materials to support students at off-campus cohorts.
- Assists with preparation of course/site information for faculty and students.
- Confers with the Dean and Associate Dean on all issues related to students advisement, student progression, student retention and the implementation of teacher licensure requirements.
- Represents the College of Education at community colleges, high school college fairs, and ETSU recruitment functions.
- Coordinates and facilitates student progression through undergraduate teacher licensure programs.
- Coordinates admission of students to teacher education.
- Provides academic advisement to prospective and enrolled students pursuing teacher licensure in any major.
- Develops and provides all teacher licensure students with licensure check sheets regarding the general education core, professional education core and major requirements.
- Provides students with information regarding advance standing and/or licensure tests (CLEP, ACT, SAT, Praxis I and Praxis II).
- Meets with off-campus student cohorts to facilitate enrollment, communication, and evaluation of programs.
- Assists with providing materials to students at off-campus sites.
- Provides assistance to students in registering for appropriate licensure exams.
- Plans and implements orientation in collaboration with the Dean.
- Performs routine academic processes with the Dean’s office (late registration, drop/add, late drop/adds, withdrawals, etc.).
- Interprets applicability to transfer credits (many consult with program faculty).
- Develops programs of study based on a student’s abilities, interests, and needs.
- Provides personal and career counseling and referral as appropriate.
- Serves as a resource for student referral to other campus areas.
- Assists students in selecting organizations consistent with career goals.
- Serves as a liaison with faculty in identifying and advising students in academic jeopardy.
- Verifies licensure course requirements for student teacher candidates.
- Computes general education, professional education, and major grade point averages in advising students regarding their progression through teacher education.
- Determines courses needed for licensure for second bachelor’s degree.
- Assists student athletes with scheduling degree-applicable courses to meet NCAA requirements.
- Provides academic counseling at off-campus sites, including cohort locations and community colleges with articulation programs.
- Interviews prospective students with information regarding enrollment at ETSU, admission to teacher education, specific licensure course requirements, and licensure test requirements.
- Trains, supervises, and evaluates three Graduate Assistants who provide undergraduate advisement and maintain student files.


Secondary Functions

- Chairs the College of Education Scholarship committee.
- Advises the Student Tennessee Education Association; attends STEA chapter meetings and state conferences.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.



Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of teacher licensure programs and Tennessee Department of Education requirements.
- Knowledge of and the ability to implement the developmental advisement model and student affairs policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of law pertaining to student rights and responsibilities and higher education issues/policies.
- Ability to make decisions, think critically, reason both logically and clearly, analyze data and develop appropriate recommendations. Flexibility to work during some non-traditional hours (ex. nights and weekends).
- Ability to lead College of Education faculty advisors in providing sound, ethical academic and career counseling.
- Ability to read, understand, interpret, and accurately communicate policy, regulations, and rules.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, administrators, faculty, and staff, both in the College of Education and across the university, and external contacts.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to design teacher licensure materials that are clear and concise.
- Knowledge of classroom teaching, including understanding how to design, plan and implement a course.
- Knowledge of basic counseling techniques.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work load.
- Ability to work with people and to create an environment that is friendly and respectful of others.
- Ability to demonstrate a commitment to ETSU core values.



Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Plans and arranges own work which is directed toward an established objective. Supervises administrative and support staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling, student personnel, higher education administration or education required; 5 years of experience in student services, advising, and/or enrollment management; knowledge of state teacher licensure requirements and university teacher licensure programs helpful; valid Tennessee teaching licensure required.
