Function of Position

Responsible to the Senior Associate Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer for supervising and overseeing the functions of the Assistant Director of Service-learning; supervising assessment of student learning in co-curricular programs; directing leadership education programs; co-directing development of learning communities; directing long-term planning and program development; coordinating divisional staff development; serving as liaison for campus-community partnerships; supervising professional, clerical and support staff; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

-        Provides leadership in development of new and continuing campus-wide leadership education programs.

-        Advises sponsoring department chairs and directs Interdisciplinary Minor in Leadership Studies, including curriculum review, recruitment, academic departmental coordination, and advisement of enrolled students.

-        Directs Leadership House program.

-        Provides campus-wide leadership in collaboration with Academic Affairs to develop and sustain additional learning communities.

-        Provides campus-wide leadership in directing growth of service-learning program.

-        Supervises Assistant Director of Service-learning, support staff and graduate assistants.

-        Liaisons with faculty in implementation of learning communities, service- learning, and leadership education programs.

-        Maintains active presence in the community through committees, non-profit boards and chamber of commerce activities.

-        Teaches courses as requested and contracted through host departments.

-        Provides leadership in development of “E” leadership portfolios, leadership transcripts, and future on-line programs.

-        Liaisons with Student Affairs committees to develop and implement staff development in division, including annual directors’ retreat.

-        Prepares and maintains annual departmental budget and grant budgets.

-        Researches, writes and administers grants for service and leadership programs.

Secondary Functions

-        Serves as primary resource for student development, leadership and service-learning literature and research.

-        Represents the university in TN NASPA and other selected professional organization as requested.

-        Directs leadership library, leadership training room and secures related leadership training materials.

-        Liaisons to faculty and departments engaged in service-learning.

-        Creates and maintains database of placement sites for students engaged in the community.

-        Liaisons with ELPA and management departments for leadership initiatives.

-        Supports NETRAN initiative.

-        Serves on selected campus committees and task forces.

-        Performs other related duties as assigned.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.  Supervises administrative, clerical and support staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree with teaching credentials in educational leadership or management; five years experience in progressively responsible higher education positions to include learning outcomes assessment, learning communities, service-learning, and leadership education; success in grant writing; a significant understanding of the literature in student development and student engagement in learning.
