Function of Position

Responsible to the Director for providing counseling and mental health care for students and career counseling for prospective students; presenting mental health information to the university through outreach programming; responds to after hours crisis calls from Public Safety; recruiting, selecting, training, and supervising graduate assistants; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Provides personal and career counseling to students and prospective students.

- Plans and directs specific group programs for students, faculty and staff.

- Conducts therapy groups with a variety of focal issues.

- Hires, trains and supervises graduate assistants.

- Supervises graduate student counseling sessions.

- Responds to after hours emergency calls from Public Safety.

- Presents outreach programs to assist students with mental health issues.

- Maintains appropriate records for counseling and supervision cases.

- Assists director in organizational development.

Secondary Functions

- Co-teaches one section of the Academic Advantage class.

- Provides information for the Center web page.

- Represents the Center at events for students and parents.

- Serves on university committees.

- Assists with documenting Center accomplishments.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of basic principles, techniques and theories of counseling and psychotherapy.

- Knowledge of administration, scoring and interpretation of psychological testing.

- Knowledge of ethical and legal issues regarding counseling.

- Knowledge of basic statistical methods.

- Ability to present workshops and group programs.

- Ability to effectively communicate and consult with all levels of employees.

- Ability to effectively present oral and written reports.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with outside agencies.

- Ability to assess, evaluate and implement crisis intervention services in emergency situations.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in counseling or psychology required; experience in career counseling, group programs, individual and marital therapy and emergency mental health service/crisis intervention; licensure or license eligible in Tennessee as a psychologist.
