Function of Position

Responsible to the Vice Provost for Public Service and Dean of Continuing Studies for directing the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) and the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) programs; overseeing recruitment, admission, enrollment, advising, retention and degree completion; scheduling all BGS and MALS courses and assigning faculty for those courses; managing credit courses; teaching BGS and MALS courses; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Oversees the BGS program including marketing of the program; recruiting students; approving student admission; advising and enrolling students; monitoring student progress; retaining students; approving course substitutions and catalog extensions; approving student learning plans for graduation; preparing newsletters, catalog copy, brochures and other printed communication; scheduling classes and assigning faculty; coordinating with other academic departments to offer courses; and teaching BGSD 3210 and 3211 as needed.

- Oversees the MALS program including marketing of the program; recruiting students; approving student admission; advising and enrolling students; monitoring student progress; retaining students; approving programs of study for graduation; approving course substitutions; monitoring culminating experiences; scheduling classes and assigning faculty; preparing newsletters, catalog copy, brochures and other printed communication; coordinating with other academic departments to offer courses; serving as graduate coordinator; serving on advisory committee; and teaching MALS 5000, 5039, 5950, 5960.

- Oversees the credit courses including coordinating and monitoring summer travel courses; preparing the summer travel program report outlining financial return of travel courses and fund redistribution; sponsoring and coordinating courses at off -campus sites; sponsoring and coordinating contract courses, courses designed for special audiences and students, Penland courses and summer workshops; tracking enrollments in all Credit Programs courses; ensuring that courses produce sufficient revenue to fund operations; coordinating with academic departments to offer credit courses; and preparing the Credit Programs report.

Supervision Given and Received

Initiates broad programs under general direction, working from policies and general objectives. Supervises administrative and classified employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D., Ed.D or other terminal degree in education or liberal arts required; three years experience in higher education; one year of experience in a undergraduate and graduate program; one year of teaching experience; must be eligible for graduate faculty status.
