Responsible to the Systems Librarian for managing the Sun Solaris and Linux computer systems operated by Sherrod Library, which includes the Voyager library management system, library web server, proxy server, SFX/MetaLib server, and electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) server; overseeing all aspects of maintaining the hardware, software, operating systems, and system management tools and applications; and performing other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Installs firmware, operating system, and software application patches and upgrades. - Installs, configures, maintains, and supports Apache web server and modules, including Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Verisign certificates. - Backs-up and restores file systems. - Manages user accounts. - Configures network interfaces, printers and backup devices. - Writes and schedules execution of scripts to automate performance of administrative tasks (e.g., new materials list, patron file updates, patron authentication files, MARC record loading). - Monitors and maintains system security. - Monitors performance (response time, disk space, processor loads) and recommends upgrades. - Troubleshoots hardware and software problems. - Schedules system maintenance and repair; coordinates schedule with outside vendors, university IT department, other libraries, and users. - Develops and maintains disaster recovery plan and procedure for assigned servers. - Archives web logs and maintains programs for web log analysis. - Documents configuration, installation, and maintenance activities.
Secondary Functions
- Helps reconfigure library PC's during upgrades and in response to crises. - Attends meetings and formal training sessions. - Monitors after-hours support phone as scheduled and responds to after-hours support calls. - Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of UNIX-based operating systems including paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and device drivers, and physical and logical files system concepts including RAID levels. - Knowledge of security issues, countermeasures, and best practices in academic IT environments. - Knowledge of MySQL, Oracle, SQL*PLUS. - Ability to use performance analysis tools to tune system performance. - Ability to program in Perl and write Unix shell scripts. - Ability to install and configure Apache web server and modules including Secure Sockets Layer (SLL). - Ability to perform system administration tasks such as user account management, operating system installation and maintenance, monitoring log files, installing and configuring application software. - Ability to prioritize and manage multiple work assignments. - Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. - Ability to solve problems.
Supervision Given and Received
Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology; five years experience as a system administrator. Preferred: certification as a Sun or Linux systems administrator; experience in an academic information technology setting; experience with LDAP, Javascript, and proxy server configuration; experience with XML and XSLT.
