Position Title: Clinical Nutrition Laboratory Supervisor

Function of Position

Responsible to the Director of the Center for Nutrition Research for the independent collection, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, and documentation of data in support of nutrition research in a clinical laboratory; performing phlebotomy on human subjects as needed; managing the laboratory and supervising laboratory technicians and/or graduate and medical students; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Operates, maintains and supervises operation of Hewlett-Packard gas chromatograph/ mass spectrometer and data systems; Hewlett-Packard liquid chromatograph system; Waters high performance liquid chromatograph and capillary electrophoresis system; Hewlett-Packard gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (engine); and other analytical instrumentation such as balances, pH meters, osmometers, Beckman ultra-centrifuge, computers, etc.

- Coordinates specimen collections, labeling and triage, as well as analysis and reporting of clinical results.

- Maintains quality control, quality assurance, and proficiency testing necessary for required laboratory licensing under state and federal government mandated guidelines.

- Performs clinical and analytical assays and experiments in the nutrition laboratory.

- Maintains coordination for patients and subjects participating in nutrition studies.

Secondary Functions

- Assists in the collection, analysis and interpretation of research data.

- Assists in the preparation of report writing, manuscripts, and publications relating to research.

- Performs phlebotomy on human subjects as needed.

- Instructs and supervises laboratory technicians, resident physicians, medical and graduate students in laboratory methodology and procedures.

- Develops testing methods and/or equipment design to be used in support of intricate research oriented activities.

- Performs literature research.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, procedures and practices.

- Knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to clinical laboratory operations.

- Knowledge of laboratory safety practices and procedures, including OSHA guidelines for bloodborne pathogens, chemical and hazardous materials, and fire regulations.

- Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

- Knowledge of research methodology.

- Knowledge of mathematical, chemical or other relevant equations.

- Ability to independently collect, analyze, and evaluate data.

- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty and the public.

- Ability to develop new systems and methods as needed.

- Ability to effectively operate analytical instrumentation and computers.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's or master's degree in chemistry, biology, pharmacology, clinical nutrition, medical technology or related field; two to four years experience in a clinical laboratory; national registry as a medical technologist; licensure with the state of Tennessee or medical licensed technologist.
