Function of Position

Responsible to the Director of Admissions for determining eligibility of applicants as freshmen, transfer students, and returning students; recruitment of prospective students; coordinating high school visitation programs; supporting student retention; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

-        Serves as ETSU’s primary representative in promoting the university to a variety of prospective students, their parents, school officials, and the general public.

-        Serves as ETSU’s primary contact with high school guidance counselors to ensure that pre-enrollment counseling occurs with high school students in a timely and accurate manner and to ensure that specific high school courses satisfy the high school unit requirements of TBR admissions policy.

-        Assesses academic credentials (including high school and college transcripts); counsels students with regard to educational goals in light of the student’s career plans and objectives.

-        Exercises independent judgment in assisting with the analysis of academic credentials including the educational quality of the institution from which a student transfers, the comparability of the nature, content, and level of credit earned to that of ETSU, and the appropriateness and applicability of credit earned to programs offered by ETSU.

-        Serves as advisor to new and enrolled students with regard to course selection and degree requirements during the absence of advisors.

-        Exercises judgment in assessing a student’s qualifications for selective majors, scholarship programs, in-state classification for fee payment, and out-of-state fee waivers.

-        Exercises discretion in counseling students who incur academic problems with issues related to retention standards, repeat policies, withdrawals, impact on the Tennessee Educational Lottery Scholarship, impact on other scholarships, suspension, and readmission.

-        Assists with the development of promotional materials and publications used in recruitment and marketing.

-        Assists with the development of recruitment plans targeted to specific groups of prospective students.

-        Exercises independent judgment in admitting or readmitting students to the university.

-        Advises students who have special academic issues (i.e., Academic Common Market, College Level Examination Program, credit by examination, credit earned at non-regionally accredited institutions, military credit, advanced placement, ACT/SAT examinations, COMPASS examination, home schooling, etc.).

-        Represents the university in professional organizations including the Watauga Counseling Association (a division of the Tennessee Counseling Association) and the Tennessee Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers).

Secondary Functions

-        Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

-        Knowledge of university and TBR policies, procedures, structure and services offered.

-        Knowledge of university admission requirements.

-        Knowledge of registration procedures.

-        Knowledge of current career trends.

-        Knowledge of course equivalencies and transfer issues.

-        Knowledge of promotional materials for all academic and student services areas at ETSU.

-        Knowledge of university catalog including degree requirements for all programs and majors.

-        Knowledge of all university policies regarding admission, retention and graduation requirements.

-        Ability to travel extensively in recruiting efforts.

-        Ability to communicate effectively to large groups or individuals.

-        Ability to counsel students and parents regarding university related matters.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; prior admissions experience preferred.
