potential; Function of Position Responsible to the Director of Environmental Health Services Laboratory for overseeing general operation of the laboratory; supervising graduate assistants, undergraduate and independent studies students; carrying out independent research projects involving water and wastewater; conducting safety training and overseeing all aspects of safety in the laboratory; develops and monitors chemical hygiene plan for the laboratory; conducts water quality monitoring and analyses for specific projects and the university community; oversees general research including virus assays and cell culture maintenance; and performing other related duties as assigned. Essential Functions - Oversees daily activities in the Environmental Health Sciences Laboratory. - Conducts water quality monitoring and analyses for specific projects. - Performs environmental science research. - Provides safety training for all laboratory personnel; reviews general laboratory procedures and equipment usage. Secondary Functions - Oversees mammalian cell culture lab and enteric virus assays. - Performs organic analyses of PAH's and phenols. - Supervises graduate students and student workers. - Develops chemical hygiene plan for the laboratory. - Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of standard methods for analyses of water and wastewater. - Ability to work in a laboratory and apply all applicable rules, regulations and safety procedures. - Ability to perform chemical and microbiological analyses, especially with cell cultures and virus assays. - Ability to communicate effectively. - Ability to work on various laboratory instruments. Supervision Given and Received Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in environmental health or environmental science; five years of related experience required.
