potential; Function of Position Responsible to the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Welfare for developing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of an academic support program for student-athletes; maintains accurate and comprehensive academic records to monitor student-athlete progress in compliance with university, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations; advising and counseling student-athletes regarding academic expectations, selection of major, course selection, study skills techniques, career planning, and other areas necessary for academic success; develops, implements and evaluates the NCAA Life Skills Program; supervises and directs Learning Specialist, student workers and graduate assistants for tutoring, scheduling, meeting NCAA eligibility and ensuring overall academic success of student-athletes; and performing other related duties as assigned. Essential Functions - Serves as athletic department liaison to other campus support programs and academic departments, faculty and staff. - Supervises and directs Learning Specialist, student workers and GA's for tutoring needs, scheduling, meeting NCAA eligibility and ensuring overall academic success of student-athletes. - Oversees academic progress of all student-athletes toward graduation; maintains academic reports, records and data necessary to comply with university, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations; develops and monitors student-athlete graduation database. - Conducts educational training and workshops for staff, coaches and student-athletes; hires and trains tutors; supervises study hall program. - Participates in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes; meets with prospective student-athletes, parents and others during evening hours and weekends as needed. - Develops and fosters positive interaction between athletic academic staff, faculty and university academic departments. - Advises and counsels student-athletes regarding academic expectations and performance including pre-advisement of freshmen, selection of major, course selection, time management, study skills, test taking, goal setting, career planning and other areas necessary for academic success. - Coordinates and supervises evening study sessions and tutorial program and other elements of the academic support program. - Assists in the coordination and integration of athletic academic support services with various university student support programs on campus. - Consults with faculty to determine student progress and academic assistance needs. - Meets regularly with student-athletes and coaches to monitor academic progress and provide counseling and advisement. - Prepares accurate academic and statistical reports as assigned. - Assesses student learning, study skills and career development; provides decision-making support and appropriate references. - Attends/participates in advising/academic department programs and meetings essential to understanding university curriculum. - Remains in full compliance with NCAA, University, and Southern Conference rules. - Complies with all NCAA rules and regulations, and acknowledges this compliance as part of an annual evaluation process. - Signs an NCAA Compliance Statement annually. Secondary Functions - Supervises graduate assistants and student workers. - Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of Tennessee Board of Regents and university admission and retention standards. - Knowledge of NCAA and conference academic eligibility regulations. - Knowledge of academic advisement process. - Knowledge of effective records management. - Ability to communicate effectively. - Ability to communicate to groups in a classroom and non-classroom setting. - Ability to assist in the development of an overall program for academic enhancement for student-athletes, including policy and procedures. Supervision Given and Received Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree required, master's preferred; experience in student academic services at the collegiate level preferred; familiarity with NCAA Division I academic requirements preferred.
