Function of Position

Responsible to the Director for counseling re-entry and first-time entering adult students on the procedures and paperwork involved in becoming a matriculating student; providing assessment for student need for counseling in the areas of career, educational, professional and personal goals; counseling with students regarding the results of various retention and assessment instruments; training and supervising volunteer mentors, student workers, and adult student volunteers in the areas of group leadership and interpersonal dynamics; advising and developing of adult student organizations; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Provides counseling services to clients in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social goals.

- Provides pre-enrollment counseling to prospective adult students.

- Conducts individual intake interviews with adult students.

- Monitors client progress and documents all client contacts.

- Administers and interprets career inventories.

- Oversees DISCOVER computerized career assessment program.

- Builds and oversees career resource library.

- Provides counseling concerning results of College Student Inventory assessments.

- Reviews student records to assess admissions status and AAPP testing status.

- Assists in coordination of adult orientation programs.

- Requests and revises computer programs to expedite orientation tasks.

- Serves as facilitator for adult orientation academic jargon session.

- Advises First Year Program students.

- Monitors progress of Freshman Success Program students.

- Initiates workshops relevant to academic concerns (test taking, coping skills, etc.).

- Advises student groups; oversees peer mentor program.

- Researches and serves as advocate for issues concerning adult students on campus.

- Analyzes statistical data pertaining to adult students.

Secondary Functions

- Participates in recruitment trips to community colleges to promote transfer student enrollment.

- Coordinates campus visits to ACTS by transfer counselors.

- Coordinates campus visits for Academic Fresh Start participants.

- Oversees support services (emergency locator service, childcare information).

- Oversees commuter services (carpool program, RideShare program and off campus housing listings).

- Develops promotional materials to maintain high level of visibility for the center.

- Attends and serves as presenter at meetings/conferences; serves on student affairs staff development committee.

- Performs public relations for the center (television and radio interviews).

- Assists in development of division-wide programs.

- Oversees Center activities during director's absence.

- Recruits, trains and supervises student support staff.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in counseling required; some experience in a higher education setting; experience working with adult, non-traditional students preferred.
