Position Title:  Director (Landscape and Grounds)

Function of Position

Responsible to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Management, Planning and Construction for supervision, planning and operation of the university landscape services and outdoor athletic facilities; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

-        Develops plans, specifications and cost estimates for landscape and renovation projects.

-        Provides leadership to the Grounds Department, Outdoor Athletic Maintenance Staff and Pest Control Staff.

-        Coordinates, inspects and monitors contracted projects to insure conformance with project specifications.

-        Maintains a clean, healthy and attractive environment for students, faculty and staff.

-        Implements university policies and procedures.

-        Develops a budget for the department and maintains documentation and budget records.

-        Schedules routine inspections for all university grounds.

-        Maintains up-to-date campus landscape plans.

-        Provides safe, cost effective labor saving equipment and chemicals for the department.

-        Maintains communication between administration and employees.

-        Requisitions material, supplies and equipment necessary for renovation, repair or maintenance, and maintains adequate supply of spare parts.

-        Conducts performance appraisals of maintenance staff and provides on-the-job training and orientation.

-        Provides employee counseling as appropriate.

-        Coordinates work schedules with craft supervisors and other university departments.

-        Determines proper Integrated Pest Management techniques and coordinates proper pesticide applications and documentations.

-        Maintains Tennessee Commercial Pesticide License.

-        Supervises maintenance of the University Arboretum and is a member of the Executive Board of the Arboretum.

Secondary Functions

-       Assures compliance with safety and OSHA standards.

-       Assists maintenance staff on specific jobs to facilitate their training.

-       Receives work requests, ranks them in response priority, assigns jobs to specific employees and contacts originator with anticipated work completion date.

-       Supervises landscape work and inside decorating of the President’s house for special occasions.

-       Attends meetings for projects and other related activities.

-      Keeps abreast of new and updated landscape and pest control practices and applicable codes, standards, safety and other related measures.

-      Promotes the university through increased public awareness and project involvement.

-      Informs campus administrators and committee members about horticultural projects.

-       Maintains active membership in professional horticultural organizations.

-      Responds to emergency calls during non-business hours and determines corrective measures.

-      Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

-        Knowledge of horticultural techniques and practices.

-        Knowledge of the operation and safe use of equipment and materials used in horticulture.

-        Knowledge of IPM (Integrated Pest Management).

-        Ability to use computer design software.

-        Ability to evaluate situations, make decisions and develop plans.

-        Ability to work independently and to supervise employees.

-        Ability to work with outside agencies to develop and coordinate projects.

-        Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and with other employees.

-        Ability to manage resources effectively.

-        Ability to present professional programs and tours to groups.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.  Supervises classified employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required in Ornamental Horticulture and Landscape Design or related field; five years  of related experience; and certified pesticide applicator license required.
