potential; Function of Position Responsible to the Vice Provost and Chief Student Affairs Officer for facilitating the social, emotional and educational development of students of color and promoting a more diverse and non-discriminatory campus community; identifying the needs and concerns of students of color; assisting with establishment of policies and programs addressing diversity, discrimination and harassment; and performing other related duties as assigned. Essential Functions -Identifies, facilitates and implements services to enhance the academic and social success of students of color. -Coordinates a new student reception to provide students with an opportunity to meet significant administrators, faculty, staff and student leaders. -Conducts an annual leadership training retreat for students of color who are identified by their organizations. -Coordinates a faculty/staff mentoring program for incoming freshmen students of color. -Implements an academic tracking and early warning system which includes advisement, regular follow-up and referral to tutoring and other support services. -Provides individual advisement and counsel for students of color concerning their social, emotional, academic and vocational concerns. -Serves as advocate with other offices on behalf of students of color in areas such as discrimination/harassment, financial assistance, residence hall issues, academic status, and conduct violations. -Conducts exit interviews and follow up with students of color who drop out or transfer to another institution. -Advises the Black Affairs Association. -Coordinates a number of educational programs and campus events to promote a diverse intellectual and social environment. -Coordinates Black History Month activities. -Cooperates with Office of International Programs to produce activities which promote cross-cultural understanding and an awareness of the international dimensions of contemporary American society. -Provides multicultural awareness training for faculty, staff and students. -Coordinates campus-wide educational efforts and assists the university in creating a more consistently welcoming and inclusive climate for people of different backgrounds, experiences and social identities. -Acts as a liaison between the university and the community concerning diversity issues, programs and services. Secondary Functions -Works with campus groups and community agencies as an information and referral source for projects addressing diverse populations and related issues. -Cooperates with community agencies sponsoring activities and events which celebrate and highlight diversity within the local community and Appalachian region. -Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities -Knowledge of issues of multicultural development. -Ability to plan, implement and evaluate academic advancement, student programs and community development programs. -Ability to motivate people to work cooperatively toward common goals. -Ability to counsel students. -Ability to communicate effectively. Supervision Given and Received Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in psychology, student personnel administration, counseling or related area; three to five years experience, preferably in a higher education setting; experience in an administrative role dealing with diversity programs.
