potential; Function of Position Responsible to the department Chair for providing computer systems support to department faculty, staff and students; supervising approximately 22 student workers and graduate assistants; managing two computer laboratories containing a wide variety of software and hardware; evaluating and implementing emerging computer technologies as they relate to an academic, research oriented setting; administrating NT, IRIX and Solaris workstations/ servers; managing FTP and HTTP servers; performing hardware and software installation; acting as a liaison with Office of Information Technology and contracted support organizations; managing budget related to software and hardware acquisition, contracts and supplies; and performing other related duties as assigned. Essential Functions - Manages 37 OS/2 workstations, Novell Netware file server, DEC VMS host, 10 Vax X/Windows workstations, DEC Ultrix host, IBM AIX host, Proteon Router, 4 Novell Print Servers, Token Ring and Ethernet. - Acquires, manages, and maintains OS/2, Windows, DOS, VMS Ultrix with X-Windows and AIX with X-Windows operating systems. - Manages and maintains communications equipment and protocols including TCP/IP, Novell Netware (IPX), Ethernet, IBM LAN Manager, Communications Manager/2, Internet servers. - Installs hardware, software, projection equipment, fax machines and modems. - Provides answers to hardware/software problems for faculty and students. - Provides technical support to the Office of Information Technology on questions concerning OS/2. - Supervises two computer laboratories and 27 laboratory workers; schedules laboratory hours; provides accounting for laboratory use; and audits security logs and time sheets. - Researches current trends in computing as related to departmental needs; performs feasibility analysis and cost estimates of software and hardware requirements for three year periods. - Orders hardware, software and supplies; researches availability and cost. - Coordinates and implements maintenance contracts for DEC/IBM hardware and other hardware. - Coordinates software/hardware maintenance contracts and licensing/acquisition agreements with vendors. Secondary Functions - Assists faculty in demonstrating laboratory equipment and software; instructs faculty on the use of office systems. - Provides help desk services and in-service workshops. - Insures all labs and faculty computing facilities are adequately supplied. - Serves on university committees. - Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of a variety of computer systems and how they operate. - Knowledge of networking protocols including TCP/IP, DECnet, IPX and SNA. - Knowledge of topologies including token ring and ethernet. - Knowledge of computer applications especially OS/2 Communications Manager/2. - Ability to solve technical hardware problems. - Ability to communicate effectively. - Ability to organize work and meet deadlines. - Ability to train users of a variety of levels. - Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Supervision Given and Received Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in computer science; at least two years experience in administrating OS/2, DOS/Windows, Netware systems, VMS, UNIX, networking and internetworking; experience in computer hardware installation and maintenance.
