Position Title: Aquatic/Outdoor Adventure Coordinator

Function of Position

Responsible to the Director for overseeing recreational programs focusing on water sports and outdoor adventure; assisting with facility management efforts; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Plans fitness programs (lap swimming), intramural sports (Basler Challenge Games), non-credit instruction (Red Cross certifications), and outdoor adventure activities (SCUBA, Kayak instruction).

- Develops equipment checkout services, non-credit classes, and trips utilizing local resources (biking/hiking trails, rock climbing sites, ski slopes, and white water rivers).

- Trains student workers to serve as instructors, life guards and trip leaders.

- Assists with facility management.

- Markets and conducts leadership and team building seminars to off-campus rental groups.

- Supervises student workers and graduate assistants.

Secondary Functions

- Corresponds with outdoor adventure sports governing bodies.

- Participates in professional associations.

- Serves on university committees.

- Teaches non-credit classes and leads trips.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of pool operations (maintenance, programming, staffing).

- Knowledge of college student development theories.

- Knowledge of the recreational sports setting.

- Knowledge of computers.

- Knowledge of marketing techniques.

- Knowledge of safety standards.

- Knowledge of up-to-date aquatic and outdoor equipment.

- Ability to function independently.

- Ability to communicate effectively.

- Ability to teach aquatics and outdoor adventure sports.

- Ability to supervise and mentor graduate assistants and undergraduate student workers.

- Ability to work as a team member.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in recreation, sports administration, student personnel or related field required; paid work experience in outdoor adventure program required; previous training as a lifeguard and/or water safety instructor required; current certification as a lifeguard trainer and/or water safety instructor preferred.
