Function of Position

Responsible to the Director of Public Safety for assisting with the efficient and effective operation of the department; commanding patrol operations and investigative division through planning and supervision; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

- Researches available federal grant programs; writes grant applications.

- Chairs and coordinates assessment process for full-time and part-time applicants.

- Serves as departmental training officer, planning and coordinating all officer training.

- Maintains officer training records.

- Commands patrol division.

- Commands investigative division through supervision and coordination of all criminal and internal investigations.

- Performs operational planning including manpower allocations, special assignment schedules, annual leave schedules, employee orientation and employee training programs.

- Assists director in departmental budget planning.

- Commands personnel and coordinates operations at athletic and special events.

- Serves on call 24 hours per day, assuming command of the department in the absence of the director.

- Responds to the scene of all emergency situations.

Secondary Functions

- Plans and coordinates crime prevention programs.

- Plans, coordinates and commands dignitary protection operations.

- Coordinates student worker program.

- Screens and interviews all full-time and part-time applicants.

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

- Knowledge of principles and practices of modern police administration.

- Knowledge of traffic control, safety and accident investigation.

- Knowledge of organization and operation as applied to field activity.

- Knowledge of criminal investigation.

- Knowledge of the use and maintenance of police records.

- Knowledge of university and state rules and regulations.

- Knowledge in the use of firearms and other specialized police equipment.

- Ability to communicate effectively.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement agencies, students, employees and the public.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Supervises classified employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree required, bachelor's preferred, preferably in law enforcement; one year of supervisory experience required; must be certifiable under Tennessee State Law Enforcement Minimum Standards Requirements and meet qualifications for employment found in the Tennessee Code Annotated 38-8-106.
