Function of Position

 

Responsible to the Chair for directing the PASTA program, a program that provides area schools with technical assistance; developing relationships with school personnel, directing student interns, installing software, trouble-shooting computer problems, maintaining labs, reprocessing older computers and scheduling their placement in public schools; evaluating and implementing emerging computing technologies as they relate to an academic, research-oriented setting; performing server installation and maintenance; managing and maintaining several computer labs; managing and evaluating student assistants; and performing other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

 

-        Coordinates the PASTA project; tracks all systems received by PASTA from the campus.

-        Tracks school information, school contacts, and computers distributed to each school.

-        Records and reports the final destination of all surplus systems.

-        Maintains property and data security in the PASTA workshop and warehouse areas.

-        Builds relationships with local school system personnel.

-        Receives and redistributes surplus campus computer systems including lifting, carrying and moving systems and monitors.

-        Manages the sanitization of all systems leaving campus.

-        Manages the disk image build and customization for systems released to the public schools.

-        Determines required hardware repairs for nonfunctional systems and the feasibility and benefits of implementing repairs for each of these.

-        Manages CSCI 4800 interns that have been assigned to PASTA.

-        Provides accounting for PASTA laboratory and warehouse area use; audits security logs, security video and time sheets.

-        Manages research projects undertaken by the PASTA interns as part of their assigned duties.

-        Provides written evaluations of the performance of all PASTA interns.

-        Recruits new workers as required.

-        Researches current trends in computing and how they relate to department and PASTA program needs.

-        Performs feasibility analysis and cost estimates of software and hardware requirements.

-        Determines end-of-life point for surplus systems based on anticipated use of systems by the school systems.

-        Researches and generates requisitions for computer equipment, software, hardware and related equipment based on availability and cost; researches the availability and cost of expendable supplies (laser toner cartridges, inkjet cartridges, media, etc.).

-        Develops relationships with vendors and resellers.

-        Manages the departmental budget for computer related items and contracts.

-        Coordinates and implements maintenance contracts with hardware and software companies.

-        Coordinates the acquisition of departmental software to ensure that current versions are installed and to ensure that the department is in compliance with legal and ethical use requirements.

-        Manages the PASS database system and the PASTA image server.

-        Installs and maintains the hardware and software for the faculty and staff of the College of Business and Technology and offers technical support to others across campus as time permits.

-        Acquires, manages, tailors and maintains hardware and software systems.

-        Assists in managing and maintaining communications equipment, communications protocols, and hardware and software technologies including workstations, servers, printers, image scanners, barcode scanners, network switches, security cameras, Bluetooth, TCP/IP, http, ftp, ssh, smtp, Oracle, Rational Suite Enterprise, Visual Studio.NET, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, etc.

-        Provides answers to software and hardware problems posed by faculty and students; acts as liaison between faculty and commercial technical support organizations.

 

Secondary Functions

 

-        Installs and manages other equipment and services including computer hardware lab for hardware courses, portable computer projection facilities, multimedia classroom technologies, fax machines, multi-function fax/print/imaging devices, and related technologies; installs, tailors and optimizes operating system and other systems software on these systems.

-        Installs new departmental computer, networking and support equipment and related components; acts as liaison with the Office of Information Technology for maintenance of existing hardware, acquisition of new hardware, and for ensuring interoperability of departmental software systems and the campus network environment.

-        Assists faculty in demonstrating laboratory equipment and software; provides instruction to faculty, students and others on the use of office computing and other hardware and software systems.

-        Consults with other departments on/off campus.

-        Works on contractual obligations including speaking at seminars, working with other to help them get started, and other related activities.

-        Serves as a member of the Systems Committee for the department and college.

-        Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree in computer science; A+ certification; systems administration and supervisory experience.
