Function of Position

Responsible to the Director for providing a wide range of administrative and regulatory advisement for international students and scholars and other members of the international community at East Tennessee State University.

 

Essential Functions

-      Provides individual advisement of international students and scholars on regulatory and administrative issues related to their immigration status including: maintaining legal status, F-1 and
        J-1 employment benefits, extension of stay, change of status, etc.

-      Serves as the PDSO (principle designated official/Department of Homeland Security Program), and ARO (alternate responsible officer/US Department of State Program).

-      Manages the SEVIS system in accordance to the Department of Homeland Security regulations.

-      Prepares all legal documents for international students and scholars.

 

Secondary Functions

-      Develops publications.

-      Advises the international student organizations.

-      Represents the university on matters related to international students and scholars.

-      Maintains database and produces report of international activities.

-      Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

-      Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations.

-      Knowledge of the SEVIS system.

-      Knowledge of legal and government procedures regarding foreign nationals studying, conducting research or working in a university setting.

-       Knowledge of computer networks and desktop publishing.

-       Ability to communicate effectively with people from various cultural backgrounds.

-       Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

-      Ability to provide organizational, leadership and conflict resolution skills.

 

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, student support services or related field required; master’s degree preferred; one year experience in related field required; knowledge of F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations, familiarity with SEVIS system and current knowledge of legal and government procedures regarding foreign experience as a DSO, RO or ARO in an academic setting with proficiency in a foreign language preferred.
