Responsible to the Vice Provost and Chief Student Affairs Officer for administering all aspects of the student judicial system, related campus security issues, and crisis response system; coordinating new student orientation programs throughout the year, and the Preview program, a four-day activity for entering students prior to the fall semester; overseeing diversity programming, the Student Organization Resource Center, the academic status appeals process, and Student Affairs publications, including the student handbook; developing and interpreting student policies and procedures; providing a number of direct student services involving individual and group advising, counseling and advocacy; coordinating administrative functions of the Student Affairs office as well as communications to Student Affairs departments and other units on campus; and performing other related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Administers the Student Discipline System including the formulation of disciplinary policies and procedures, communication with campus and city police, communication with housing officials, management of disciplinary files, and temporary suspension of students experiencing behavioral or psychological difficulties. - Coordinates the new student Orientation and Preview programs including program planning, materials acquisition, student staff selection and training, chairing the Orientation Advisory Committee, budgetary oversight, and program evaluation. - Chairs the Management Team of the Student Organization Resource Center, administers the Center’s operating budget, and provides leadership in the development and coordination of core services in support of student activities and campus-wide events. - Provides day-to-day administrative, communication and “trouble-shooting” support for the Vice Provost and Chief Student Affairs Officer. - Chairs the Diversity Programs Committee, administers budget earmarked for diversity activities and insures that campus programming is balanced and inclusive of minority student interests. - Serves as the Division of Student Affairs’ representative on the Leadership Committee of the University’s Quality Enhancement Program. - Manages the Critical Incident Response System. - Administers the Academic Appeals Process. - Edits the Spectrum, the Student Affairs’ portion of university catalogues and other Student Affairs’ publications. - Chairs the Fraternity Visioning Committee in charting the future courses of social fraternities.
Secondary Functions
- Counsels students and advises selected student organizations. - Updates the Security Information Report and coordinates compliance efforts. - Serves on Transfer Advisory and Enrollment Management committees and Student Affairs task forces. - Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures. - Knowledge of personal and networked computers and of student information data systems (SIS preferred). - Knowledge of peer education. - Knowledge of counseling and advisement. - Knowledge of student affairs activities. - Ability to work with students who are experiencing psychological or behavioral difficulties. - Ability to organize large scale, complex programs often involving the coordination of academic and student affairs personnel from all ranks of the university community. - Ability to perform high-level management, including fiscal management. - Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of persons in a service environment. - Ability to plan and implement programs and services. - Ability to utilize spreadsheets, word processing, databases, and graphics. - Ability to function independently with a minimum of supervision.
Supervision Given and Received Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Provides administrative oversight for staff associated with student orientation program and the Student Resource Center. Minimum Qualifications Doctorate degree in higher education administration, student personnel administration, management, counseling or related field; five years experience in a higher education setting; evidence of professional development experiences related to student personnel administration in higher education.
