Function of Position
The Director of the ETSU Research Foundation functions to support the role of
the Foundation in furthering the research, education, public service and
economic development missions of the university.
The Director reports directly to the Executive Director of the Research
Foundation. Duties include:
identification and acquisition of extramural support on behalf of the
institution’s research and economic development programs; promotion of the
institution’s intellectual property and its commercialization; development of
marketing and communication efforts in support of the Foundation and the
Innovation Library.
Essential Functions

Participates as a representative of the Foundation in local, state and
regional partnerships and conferences for economic development.

Facilitates technology transfer and the commercialization of appropriate
university inventions.

Negotiates industrial grants, licenses, and contracts under the guidance
of the Executive Director.

Supports the strategic goals of the Innovation Lab through the
development and implementation of creative marketing and fundraising
initiatives.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of the operations of a complex academic institution

Knowledge of leadership, management (personnel and financial) and
interpersonal skills

Ability to work well with others, including a wide range of faculty
members and university administrators.

Knowledge of the protection and transfer of university intellectual
property.

Knowledge of and appreciation for academic research and both its role and
potential in furthering the overall mission of the institution.

Ability to identify and facilitate relationships between ETSU and the
business community.
Supervision Given and Received
Performs under general supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
M.S. required, Ph.D. or other terminal degree preferred; five years of
experience in or with academia, faculty experience preferred; experience with a
broad range of sponsored program development and fund raising including
industrial grants/contracts development, federally sponsored programs and
corporate/foundation relations;
experience in research administration at the institutional level preferred.
