Position Title:  Web Developer

Function of Position

 

Responsible to the Director of the Office of Academic Technology, eLearning, and Online Education for designing, developing, and producing a variety of computer, Web and/or multimedia graphics, animation, video production, sound and/or content materials to support ETSU web needs; assisting the web manger in performing their duties; and performing other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

 

-        Assists the Web manager to help administrative units, colleges, and departments audit content and establish an information architecture.

-        Works closely with the Web manager to create a dynamic, usable Web interface.

-        Works closely with the Web manager to migrate current Web content into CMS.

-        Edits CMS Java Script Pages (JSP) as needed.

-        Provides development activities related to Web content publications for ETSU faculty and staff, including but not limited to CMS training.

-        Assist the Web manager in defining roles and permissions within the CMS.

-        Conducts usability test and statistics as necessary.

-        Remains informed of technical developments in Web publishing.

-        Improves the quality of ETSU electronic documents.

-        Monitors ETSU Web for inappropriate use of Web space under the direction of the Web manager.

-        Responds in an efficient and effective manner to email and telephone calls related to Web issues.

-        Provides continuous site management.

-        Explores emerging technologies to ensure ETSU has a forward moving vision regarding the Web presence.

-        Designs Web templates for use on ETSU servers as required.

-        Develops and presents workshops related to Web publications, including but not limited to, workshops in Dreamweaver and CMS.

-        Supports the mission and goals of Academic Technology, eLearning and Online education unit.

 

 Secondary Functions

 

-        Serves on appropriate university and college committees.

-        Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

-        Knowledge of Web management, HTML, JavaScript, CMS, JSP, and ASP.

-        Knowledge of Print and electronic media design.

-        Knowledge of graphic design, usability, accessibility, and content development.

-        Knowledge of Web development tools such as Java Server Pages, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Microsoft FrontPage.

-        Knowledge of object-oriented databases.

-        Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written.

-        Ability to adapt to changing priorities, be creative, and work independently.

 

 

Supervision Given and Received

 

Performs under general supervision; Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Digital Media or Graphic Design required, Master’s degree preferred. Experience designing and developing for the Web required; experience with content management systems preferred; knowledge of usability testing for the Web preferred; experience using SQL and/or Oracle preferred; experience in graphic design required; experience with Photoshop and Dreamweaver required.
