 Function of Position

Responsible to the Director of Academic Technology in the Office of eLearning for supporting ETSU online students and faculty; working with academic and administrative departments to facilitate online programs including monitoring and supporting online student activities; reviewing current practices; developing support services for online programs; and performing other related duties as assigned.

 Essential Functions

-          Provides comprehensive and current information and advice to online students regarding ETSU and RODP online courses including information pertaining to admissions, registration, campus contacts, graduation processes, appeals and disciplinary procedures and online course management systems.

-          Assists student support departments, i.e., Offices of Student Affairs, Registrar, Admissions and Financial Aid and Adult, Commuter and Transfer Services, in identifying and improving services required by online students and ensuring that such services are available to all online students.

-          Serves in a leadership role in developing initiatives to enhance overall effectiveness of online degree programs and services.

-          Facilitates the student complaint and grade appeal process for RODP online students.

-          Assists academic departments in developing successful support strategies for online and distance students.

-          Develops and maintains an ETSU online student handbook including comprehensive information pertaining to distance learning services, advisement contacts, admission, registration, graduation requirements, grade appeals and disciplinary procedures, etc.

-          Serves as a liaison to the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) regarding Regents online degree programs and attends TBR meetings and training sessions as needed.

-          Assesses student attrition in online courses and programs and develops strategies to improve retention.

-          Coordinates the benchmarking, assessment and evaluation efforts for online courses, programs and services.

-          Designs and develops training materials and user documentation to meet instructional and institutional needs.

-          Conducts training workshops on topics related to the integration of technology in education as well as e-Learning and online education.

-          Consults with department representatives and helps develop special projects toward achieving university strategic goals.

-          Designs, develops, and implements instructional technology development activities and projects that support the academic technology strategic plan.

-          Provides technology development activities and support for web-based and web-enhanced course management systems.

-          Designs, develops, and implements strategies that promote collegial exchange, instructional support, consultation, and professional development activities related to the integration of technology into instruction.

-          Reviews, improves, and revises academic technology workshop materials and tutorials.

-          Develops multimedia tutorials to coordinate with academic technology workshops.

-          Develops and publishes web resources related to current research and literature in the field of computing technology in education.

-          Participates in professional development activities to enhance skills and abilities related to computer applications and adult education principles.

Secondary Functions

-          Serves on various committees including the ETSU RODP Advisory Board and Transfer Advisory Council.

-          Assists with marketing online degree programs and services.

-          Examines online activity of peer institutions to access the effectiveness of ETSU online programs.

-          Coordinates RODP test proctoring procedures.

-          Coordinates development of tutorials for online student help services.

-          Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

-          Knowledge of adult education and practices.

-          Knowledge of current online education practices.

-          Knowledge of university admission, registration, general education, and graduation policies and requirements.

-          Knowledge of current practices in the assessment of experiential learning.

-          Knowledge of online education and degree programs.

-          Knowledge of student services and retention strategies for on-campus, off-campus, and online students.

-          Knowledge of computers.

-          Knowledge of the Student Information System (SIS).

-          Ability to communicate effectively and solve problems.

-          Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.

-          Knowledge of the use of technology in instructional design.

-          Ability to design and develop instructional materials, reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

-          Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

-          Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

-          Ability to make formal training presentations.

-          Ability to communicate effectively.

Supervision Given and Received

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred; two to three years related experience required, experience with adult/online students at the university level preferred; and experience and knowledge of Banner, D2L, WebCT, Blackboard, and other learning management systems preferred.
