Function of Position

 

The Director of the museum oversees the museum’s day to day operations by coordinating events and displays, working with the gift shop, maintaining security, setting hours and policy, etc.; supervises the museum staff by assigning tasks, overseeing display construction, etc; coordinates the museum’s fundraising efforts and aggressively pursues funding; and participates in various outreach functions. The Museum Director reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

 

Essential Functions

 

-        Oversees the museum’s operation.

-        Supervises the museum staff.

-        Leads the museum’s fundraising activities.

-        Directs and participating in various outreach functions.

-        Advances the museum’s role in the educational and outreach missions of ETSU.

 

Secondary Functions

 

-        Interacts with other departments on campus.

-        Participates in guidance of students and delivery of the curriculum.

-        Participates in scientific meetings, professional service, teaching, and other activities for the advancement of science are strongly encouraged.

-       Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

 

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

-        Knowledge of Natural History.

-        Knowledge of good “people skills”.

-        Knowledge of business skills because of financial responsibilities of the faculty and the gift shop.

-        Ability to communicate effectively with the public (fundraising and outreach).

 

 

Supervision Given and Received

 

Performs under general supervision.  Supervises administrative and classified staff.  Indirectly supervises volunteers.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

An advanced degree in an appropriate field (Geology/Geoscience, Biology, Museum Studies or related field) is desirable; at least four years of museum (or equivalent) experience.
