Function of Position

 

Responsible to the Project Director for assisting with establishing and training preschool teachers who work in designated “Reading First” schools to implement developmentally appropriate literacy strategies and develop interventions for preschool students who are at- risk for difficulties in the public schools; developing and implementing training modules for participating preschool system personnel; supervising project assistants; conducting project evaluations; writing reports based on project activities; and performing other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions

 

-        Travels throughout Tennessee to identify, contact, and establish rapport with preschools which feed into early reading first public schools.

-        Develops and refines literacy training modules  for training preschool personnel in assessment and intervention for students at-risk for failure in the public schools.

-        Implements training modules with preschool personnel.

-        Consults with preschool personnel regarding their application of assessment and intervention methods for development of literacy and pre-literacy skills.

-        Conducts project evaluation activities.

-        Supervises project graduate assistants in carrying out project evaluation and observation activities.

-        Maintains and analyzes data resulting from project evaluation activities.

-        Coordinates project activities with preschool programs identified by the State Improvement Grant Steering Committee.

-        Serves as liaison to other relevant community programs, agencies, advocacy groups, and families of children who attend preschools which are located in designated reading first schools.

 

Secondary Functions

 

-        Maintains budget and writes financial reports.

-        Determines materials and supplies needed to fulfill the training components of the grant.

-        Assists with hiring and training of graduate assistants.

-        Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge and Abilities

 

-        Knowledge of typical and atypical child development.

-        Knowledge of current research in literacy including techniques and interventions.

-        Knowledge of computers and various software programs.

-        Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices.

-        Ability to communicate effectively.

-        Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding information on children and families.

 

Supervision Given and Received

 

Performs under general supervision.  Determines own methods of performing assigned work.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Must be within 12 hours of completion of a master's degree in early childhood education, special education or related field; experience working with young children, preferably young children with disabilities.
