Function of Position
Responsible to the head of the Sherrod Library Systems Department and serves as
the primary system administrator for the Sun Solaris and Linux computer systems
supporting the university libraries’ operations.
Position will participate in a 24-hour on-call weekly support rotation
and perform periodic weekend and off-hour work for system maintenance, upgrades
and repairs while coordinating these activities with vendors, the university’s
Office of Information Technology and users.
Position is responsible for security and disaster recovery planning for
assigned servers.
Essential Functions

Serves as administrator of Solaris and Linux systems in an
expertise-level networked environment.

Installs and maintains Sun Solaris 9, firmware, and software application
patches and upgrades.

Manages user accounts.
-
Monitors and maintains system security.
-
Installs and configures application software.
-
Backs up and restores file systems in a RAID (mirrored and striped)
configuration.

Installs, configures, and maintains Apache web server and modules,
including SSL, and hardware and software for power management and environmental
monitoring.

Configures network interfaces, printers, and backup devices.
-
Provides experience in network interface configuration (Ethernet, TCP/IP)
and troubleshooting network communication problems.

Installs, configures, maintains, and modifies open-source software
applications and utilities.

Writes and schedules execution of UNIX shell scripts.

Monitors performance and recommend upgrades

Writes programs in Perl, PHP to maintain data in databases (Oracle, MySQL).

Installs, configures, and maintains MySQL databases.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of security issues, countermeasures, and best practices in
academic IT environments.

Ability to install, configure, maintain, and modify open-source software
applications and utilities.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in computer sciences or related field and at least four years of experience directly related to the job requirements OR successful completion of at least 40 college-level credit hours in computer science/programming and at least 6 years of experience directly related to the job requirements; successful completion of training required toward certification as a Sun System Administrator. Preferred: Certification as a Sun or Linux System Administrator; experience in an academic library information technology environment; training and experience with Oracle database administration; experience with LDAP, DNS, and proxy server configuration; knowledge of XML, XSLT.
