potential; Function of Position Responsible to the Director of Athletics with general supervision by the administrative designee assigned by the director for providing coaching expertise and leadership for the administration of intercollegiate athletic programs; management and administration of all aspects relating to a positive and beneficial intercollegiate experience for student-athletes; and performing other related duties as assigned. Essential Functions - Provides leadership, organization and supervision for all practices and contests. - Implements and maintains standards of performance consistent with departmental academic and athletic expectations as reflected in the mission statement, goals, objectives, departmental guidelines, and performance appraisal procedures. - Assists in securing qualified individuals and effectively evaluating and supervising assistant coach(es); assigns specific coaching and administrative responsibilities as appropriate. - Organizes and implements a successful recruiting program to attract outstanding student-athletes to attend East Tennessee State University. - Conducts all aspects of the program within the rules, regulations, and procedures of the conference, the NCAA, the departmental policy manual, and the university. - Attends and participates in department and staff meetings as requested/required. - Manages the program within the parameters of the approved budget. - Coordinates with the Director of Athletics or designee the hiring of assistant coaches and other support staff for the program, all budget requests and projected fiscal needs, scheduling of all intercollegiate contests and team travel, eligibility requirements to ensure full compliance with governing rules and regulations, financial aid recommendations for both prospective and enrolled student-athletes, facilities scheduling and repair and maintenance of equipment associated with the program, contest administration and game operations, and the development of media guides and related publications for the promotion of the program. - Communicates regularly and maintains a positive and constructive working relationship with support staff in sports information, student services, sports medicine, equipment room, business office, facilities/operations, compliance, athletic advancement, marketing, ticket office and weight room to assist in implementation of an efficient and effective program and department. - Assists and engages in fund-raising activities for the program in conjunction with athletic advancement, the Pirate Club and its representatives. - Represents the university at professional meetings, alumni gatherings, campus activities and civic affairs. - Encourages and administers an effective outreach program with student-athletes that provides benefit to the on and off-campus community. - Maintains as appropriate effective relationships with parents, alumni, friends of the program, and others toward the positive image and promotion of the program. - Remains in full compliance with NCAA, University, and Southern Conference rules. - Complies with all NCAA rules and regulations, and acknowledges this compliance as part of an annual evaluation process. - Signs an NCAA Compliance Statement annually. Secondary Functions - Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge and Abilities - Knowledge of basic principles of coaching/team supervision. - Knowledge of basic budget preparation and maintenance. - Ability to effectively supervise program staff. - Ability to effectively develop and coordinate recruiting activities. - Ability to effectively schedule sporting events. - Ability to effectively teach classes as assigned. - Ability to maintain team discipline and instill proper ethical and moral standards Supervision Given and Received Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Supervises, as assigned, all assistant coaches, graduate assistants, interns and student workers. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred with appropriate experience at the intercollegiate, junior college, high school level or club level; must have knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
