Maps For:
Conducting Regional Roundtable Discussions to Understand
Cancer Differences between Bordering Counties and Regions

Linked below are several maps which display cancer rates by county. These maps show cancer death rates (mortality) by age (premature mortality [before age 65] and elderly morality [age 65+]) and some cancer incidence rates (new cases) by type of cancer. The maps show high and low rates by different colors. The counties in yellow have the lowest rates; the counties in dark red have the highest rates. Counties colored in gray means there is no data for the county. The original maps and an explanation of cancer rate differences can be downloaded here (warning, this may take a long time to download if you are using dial-up).

The maps provide easy to understand information that can begin the discussions. To complete the Request For Proposals, applicants should identify their own counties/multi-county regions and compare their rates (represented by high or low quartiles) with bordering counties and regions. Applicants can choose to address All Cancers or any specific type of cancer for which maps are provided (lung, breast, prostate, or colorectal). The comparisons can be between single counties or clusters of counties in a region. The comparisons can cross state lines. Examples of regions in which differences are clear are circled in the All Cancer maps.
