How to Search the World Wide Web!
(For Dummies by a Dummy)

Sometimes searching the Web can be an intimidating task for people who are not familiar with this method of obtaining information.  The World Wide Web should be thought of as our friend.  It is really a valuable tool to use.  The steps to searching the web are really quite simple.  Of course you can get more in depth, but for our purposes, let's take baby steps!
Listed below are a few simple steps to get us on our way.  Let's begin...

Step #1:

When your desktop appears on your screen, you will see a number of icons or pictures on the left side.  Among these icons will be "Netscape Communicator."  Using your mouse, double-click on "Netscape Communicator."

**This step will immediately take you to the ETSU  homepage.**

Step #2:

In the address bar at the top of the page, type in the address or URL of your favorite search engine.

    **For example:  www.yahoo.com
                            www.webcrawler.com

Step #3:

Once you get to your desired search engine, you can...
1)  Find a number of links that will take you elsewhere.  Find a topic that is written in a different color (usually blue) and click on it.  You will find yourself in a new location.  If you do not want to be there, simply click on "Back" (located in the upper left corner) and you will return to the previous page.

2)  Find a scroll bar on the right side of your screen.  It is easy to spot with an arrow pointing UP and an arrow pointing DOWN.  Click on either arrow and you can see what the entire page has to offer!

3)  Find a blank bar at the top of the page where you can type in anything your heart desires.  (Do not get discouraged if the Web cannot find your topic- simply try a similar or more common term for the Web to search for!)  Finally, click "search."

Now that you officially know how to "Search the Web," Happy Hunting!
