6: Editorial Changes
Current revisions to the Graduate Faculty
Appointment/Reappointment form. These
current revisions consist of the enlarged explanatory boxes, added review period to VII, VIII, IX, X, and
XI. The section XII added “Attach current Curriculum Vitae with all Scholarly
Research, Publication, Grants, or Creative Activities in the last review period, highlighted with dates.” Sections A, B, C, and D added or attach an explanatory memo. Sections A and D added or Expected Role in Graduate Education and Scholarship. Furthermore, the instruction section,
page 1 will be revised. In addition, other revisions were discussed by the
council members.
At the request of the Council, Dr. McIntosh presented draft language to appear in the FAQ section on the Graduate School website regarding interpretation of policy regarding terms of GA/TS eligibility for students pursuing second master’s degrees. The following was approved by the Council for posting:
“The number of terms/years of eligibility for students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees can be found in the GA/TS handbook. Students pursuing dual master’s degree programs or second master’s degree programs may be considered for a third year of support (one additional year); approval is considered by the Dean or Associate Dean of the School of Graduate Studies in response from a request from the student’s current Graduate Program Coordinator and by the GA/TS contracting unit. All other requirements of eligibility must be met.”
Section
7: Miscellaneous Actions
Recently, the School of Graduate Studies added a new paid internship position to assist graduate students. Ms. Laura Pepper-Weiler is the Graduate Student Success Specialist and a Social Work graduate student. There are circumstances that occur during the academic career of students and this is a win-win situation to find resources for the graduate student to be successful at ETSU. Dr. Karin Bartoszuk is the task supervisor. The information has been posted to the Graduate Studies website with name, email, and contract phone number. Also, the information was mentioned at the academic council, the Graduate Studies orientation, and emailed to all graduate students.
Dr. McIntosh requested the policy
interpretation of terms of GA/TS eligibility for students pursuing second
master’s degrees from council members. The council recommended limiting
to one year. Also, dual degree graduate students must complete the first
masters before applying for the second master’s degree. This will
encourage finishing one before beginning the next degree. The Council
concurred that there would be no rewording of policy, rather a clarification
about administration of the policy. Dr. McIntosh will draft wording that could
be included in the FAQ section of the GA website and will present it at the
next meeting.
Dr. Bartoszuk stated the latest revised
draft regarding the application for the thesis/dissertation scholarships was
sent to the council members for feedback. During the council meeting the
draft was distributed for review and recommendations. The recommendations
consisted of editorial corrections and clarification of who to report to, where
to send, and the official email address. The application and other
information will be posted to the Graduate School web site by April 1, 2012.
Dr. Bartoszuk and Dr. Beck are collaborating to bring a GRE
preparation program to ETSU. The GRE
program will be a course on campus and will be handled by Professional
Development under Ms. Darla Dye with Dr. Bob Price providing the room. The announcement will be sent in July for a GRE
program offered in October and April.
This will be an all-day course that includes verbal, quantitative, and
writing with three practice tests and lunch.
The service/program is offered to both undergraduates and graduates
students. The GRE preparation program
will be able to offer assistance to approximately forty students per session.
