Online and web-enhanced courses have become a powerful way of reaching and engaging students. Traditional classroom students can now interact with students at great distances. Non-traditional students can work and continue their education thanks to asynchronous courses.
As faculty, it can be difficult to navigate the ever-changing technology that allow these powerful assets. That's where we come in.
Desire2Learn Class Management System
Desire2Learn is our Online Learning Environment here at ETSU. Desire2Learn can be used to teach a course entirely online or as an enhancement for a traditional classroom where you can post materials and have online discussions. Desire2Learn is extremely flexible, easy to use, and scalable so that you can use the tools you need to teach your course.
Synchronous Online Systems
Synchronous online systems such as Wimba Classrooms, Adobe Connect and the Codian Bridge give faculty the ability to engage students wherever they might be. As long as they have a computer, they can join a virtual classroom and interact with the instructor and other students.
The Regents Online Degree Program is a fully online degree program from the Tennessee Board of Regents. The TBR's technology centers, community colleges, and universities have joined in collaboration to offer the various online programs available through RODP. Students may choose to take individual classes through RODP or enroll in one of the many fully online degree programs.
" I want to know how to do that!"
Well. . .you are in the right place.
Each semester, Academic Technology Services offers dozens of workshops designed to provide participants training with the technology they need to work successfully in a twenty-first century university environment. From Microsoft Office applications to the Desire2Learn course management system, from web design to digital media creation, from multimedia classroom training to teaching online, we most likely offer what you have been looking for. If not, let us know what you would like to see us offer, and if demand warrants, we will create a workshop specifically on that topic, or suggest other ways that we can help you receive the training you need (such as cohort training, see below).
At the beginning of each semester we post a list of the upcoming workshops on the ETSU Calendar website. Throughout the semester we may add new workshops to the calendar as they are warranted, so check back often, or subscribe to receive notifications via email.
Our workshops are intended primarily for faculty and staff. However, graduate students with teaching responsibilities and those working on projects for faculty mentors may also take the workshops when space permits. While we try to offer enough workshops to satisfy demand, in the event that a workshop is filled beyond capacity graduate students may be required to yield their spots to faculty or staff.
Sometimes our workshop schedule just doesn’t fit with your schedule. Well, we'll come to you! Cohort workshops can be scheduled at your location or in our lab, and can be specialized for your group. The cohort workshop does not need to be on topics that we offer in open-enrollment workshops.
Cohort training is a great way for departments to keep their members current on new technology.
Online Guides and Tutorials
Academic Technology offers a large selection of digital material online such as guides, walkthroughs and video tutorials on a variety of different software and equipment. Some of these go hand in hand with our workshops, others are commonly asked questions or just handy tips.
Multimedia Classroom Training
Most classrooms at ETSU are now Multimedia Classrooms, which are state-of-the-art facilities with access to equipment to deliver multimedia content.
ATS provides training for these rooms and serves as a liaison between the faculty, the technicians, and the planners who design and implement the rooms. ATS offers multiple sessions of Multimedia Classroom Training in the weeks preceding each semester. Individualized or small group training can also be arranged at other times convenient to you.
The ATS web team is here to help you with your departmental or faculty website needs, whether it's design, organization, coding or any questions you may have about getting your website the way you want it.
Content Management System (CMS)
The Content Management System allows faculty and staff to update the content of their department site without any experience in coding, designing, or implementing websites. This gives departments the ability to keep their content up-to-date easily and ETSU a unified look and navigational structure crucial to help visitors find the information they need quickly and easily.
Visit the Content Management System Site to learn more about CMS and receive help or training.
The ATS web team offers support and tips for the 'PlanIt ETSU' Calendar system. Training is available for departments responsible for putting information into the calendar, and video walkthroughs are accessible for tips on viewing, organizing, and subscribing to events.
ATS can support you in a variety of multimedia needs. From designing a flyer or website banner to recording a short video, we enjoy letting our creativity out for a spin.
Logos, flyers, posters, pamphlets, invitations, web banners, newsletters, on and on. . .you name it and we've helped ETSU departments design it. Need help with a project? Let us know.
Video Editing and Conversions
ATS can convert many different formats of video to current formats usable in a variety of ways. Need to show your online students a VHS tape? We can convert it to a DVD or a streaming video format. Pulled some videos you taped off a camera but you can't edit them? It is likely we can convert them into a usable format and help you edit them.
Try it before you buy it! ATS offers a wide array of equipment that your department may not have access to. Want to try out a Kindle? Need a mic for a recording? Need a Response System (clickers) or a project for a special presentation?
