FAQ
How do I cite Internet sources?
Check out the Sherrod Library's Research Sources page, which also includes links to the appropriate APA and MLA web pages. It is likely that the accepted style for citing web sources will continue to change as the Internet grows, so it is a good idea to keep in contact with the APA and MLA as standards continue to emerge. The 7th Edition of MLA has finally come out, with some very significant changes related to citing sources from the web. Go to Purdue's Guide to MLA 2009 to check them out.
Where can I find out how to properly quote and paraphrase?
To learn how to properly quote and paraphrase, and to keep your documentation straight, make sure you are looking at the proper examples for the style you are following (APA or MLA). You can find them in our Handouts section.
Where can I find additional information about writing, speaking, or teaching?
Go to the Podcast and Blogs link under the Resources tab for short articles, audio, and video tutorials and a wide array of topics.
Who works in the Center?
The Center is operated by a full-time director and a tutoring staff of 15-20 graduate and undergraduate consultants drawn from majors and departments across the university.
What is the purpose of the Center?
The purpose of the Center is to support writing and oral communication across-the-curriculum. We do so in two ways. First, we consult with students individually or in small groups to answer assignment-related questions, help them overcome communication-related problems, or just give them informed feedback on papers or presentations in progress. Second, we work with faculty to develop workshops, class activities, and assignments that reinforce the goals of the writing and oral communication across-the-curriculum program.
What if I can't find what I'm looking for on this website?
The best resource available online is Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL), a constantly updated source of information that their Writing Center is kind enough to share with students world-wide. We don't create a lot of handouts because they have already done such an excellent job, why reinvent the wheel? If nothing available there appeals to your needs, e-mail your question to WCC Director Rob Russell (russellr@etsu.edu) and a staff member will respond as soon as possible. Or, call us at 439-7848.
