I attended ETSU at Kingsport my first two years of college, a decision which allowed me to adjust to college life in a smaller setting. I didn’t get the “campus living experience” until the first semester of my junior year. Moving on campus was scary experience for me because I lived with my parents and never really had to be self-sufficient. I was nervous about being on my own, to make my own decisions, to eat whenever I wanted to eat, and to be able to come and go as I pleased. It’s okay to be nervous about moving on campus because it’s a new experience, but it’s also a very exciting one.
Living on campus has proved to be very enlightening for me. I’ve learned how to make friends quickly, and I’m still adjusting to being on my own and being responsible for getting myself up on time (the snooze button has become my best friend). But campus life is the best way to learn about yourself and others. Campus life can equip you with life skills that will assist you on your road to adulthood. It opens your eyes to things you may otherwise have never seen. It provides a way for you to find out how your schedule needs to be configured so that you can make the most of all your time while learning time management. It also helps you develop social skills that will be helpful in any profession or career.
I chose to attend ETSU because it is a more personal campus. When I first toured here I got the feeling that it was very family oriented and the people were very friendly. There are also numerous activities in which you can be involved, and whatever you want to do is here within close proximity. The campus is very beautiful, and, in the spring, you can see various plant and animal life on your way to class. If you’ve never really taken the time to enjoy and appreciate nature, attending ETSU will help you to do that and so much more.
By attending ETSU, I’ve learned that I can do anything I want to do and I am capable to achieving any goal I set if I apply myself and use the helpful resources that are provided. I’m so glad that I came to ETSU because I can’t see myself at any other university. This really has become my home away from home.
