Roan Scholars Leadership Program

This innovative program draws its inspiration from Roan Mountain, the highest peak in the area - a motivational sight and symbol of the strength, character, and idealism native to the people of this region. To promote the quality of leadership necessary to carry the Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia into, through, and beyond the 21st century, visionary Louis H. Gump, a longtime friend of ETSU, initiated the idea and helped to found the Roan Scholars Leadership Program on the ETSU campus.

The Roan Scholars Leadership Program is seeking the best and brightest young leaders. Students from the Tri-Cities region and beyond will be identified for their strong leadership potential. Outstanding character, scholastic honors, extracurricular activity and intellectual curiosity will all be taken into consideration for students chosen to become ETSU Roan Scholars. Top performers will be nominated for this prestigous scholarship by their high school principals.

These merit-based scholarships include tuition, housing, meals and a book allowance. It also features a summer physical enrichment experience with a focus on team building skills. Community leaders accross the region serve as mentors, working with Roan Scholars on their leadership development skills throughout their course of study abroad or work opportunities in another part of part of the country. Throughout the program, they will also development a leadership portfolio.
