Course Description

Developmental Prerequisites to Core Courses

Students who are required to take developmental studies courses are blocked from taking certain other university core courses until developmental courses are completed. Click here to see a list of the university core requirements and restrictions based on developmental studies placement. Courses with an M, R, or W after them represent courses which cannot be taken by students who are required to take developmental math, reading, or writing, respectively.

English (DSPW) - Department of English

DSPW 0800. Fundamentals of Composition (3 hours)
Designed to help students develop essential skills for completing essay length assignments. This course concentrates on thematic organization, prewriting strategies, revising, editing, grammar, paragraphing, diction, and topic and thesis statements. (The graduation requirement is increased by three hours for students enrolled in this course.)

Mathematics (DSPM) - Department of Mathematics

DSPM 0800. Elementary Algebra (3 hours)
An algebra course emphasizing the fundamental operations of integers,linear equations and inequalities, fundamental operations of polynomials, linear equations and applications, systems of equations and inequalities, and introduction to graphing. (The graduation requirement is increased by three hours for students enrolled in this course.)

DSPM 0850. Intermediate Algebra (3 hours)
An algebra course emphasizing sets, the real number system, fundamental operations, exponents, factoring, solving quadratic equations by factoring, algebraic fractions, stated problems, exponents and radicals, relations, quadratic equations, ratio, proportion, variation and statistics. (The graduation requirement is increased by three hours for students enrolled in this course.)

DSPM 0990. Plane/Analytical Geometry (3 hours)
A course designed to fulfill a high school deficiency in geometry. The study of lines, angles, polygons, circles, surfaces, solids, the cartesian plane, and the development of critical thinking skills are stressed. These concepts are reinforced through activities on the computer. Prerequisite: DSPM 0850 or high school Algebra I and II.

Reading (DSPR) - School of Continuing Studies

DSPR 0800. Fundamental Reading (3 hours)
This course builds expertise in academic reading for university courses. Strategies taught in the course target the following reading proficiencies: acquisition of general vocabulary and discipline-specific terminology; recognition and expression of superordinate and subordinate concepts; interpretation of an author's purpose, opinion, and tone; fluency in reading; thoughtful response to written information and narration; summarization; and research techniques. (The graduation requirement is increased by three hours for students enrolled in this course.)

Study Skills (DSPS) - School of Continuing Studies

DSPS 0800. Learning Strategies (3 hours)
This course builds students' personal and academic management skills through work with the following topics: university resources and services for students, time management, cultural diversity, social management, career planning, lecture notetaking, study strategies, test-taking concerns, and academic anxiety. (The graduation requirement is increased by three hours for students enrolled in this course.)
