Class of 1979
Raymond Flynn was born in Longford, Ireland, the oldest of nine children. He became the Irish and British schools 1500m Champion in 1974 and accepted a track scholarship to run for Dave Walker and the famed 'Irish Brigade'. While at ETSU, he became a champion runner and All-American for the Bucs, setting school records which still stand today for 1500m and the mile. He was inducted into the ETSU athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.
For ten years he competed as a professional athlete around the world. He was a two-time Olympian for Ireland in 1980 and 1984 and ran under 4 minutes for the mile no less than 89 times. He is one of a select group of men who have run under 3 minutes and fifty seconds for the mile. His Irish record, set in 1982 of 3 minutes 49.77 seconds, still stands. Ray graduated from ETSU with a bachelor's degree in business management. After competing as a middle distance runner on the track circuit, he went into business in 1989, setting up a professional sports agency. Flynn Sports Management manages the endorsements and competitions of many of the world's greatest track and marathon athletes. Several of these athletes have become Olympic Gold medalists and world record holders.
He is one of the world's top sports agents and is accredited by the World Governing Body for Athletics in Monte Carlo.
In 2012, Ray took over as Meeting Director of the world-famous Millrose Games Indoor Meeting in New York City.
Ray married Jana Clement, an ETSU alumna, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1985 and a master's degree in 1997 from the College of Nursing. They have three children, Kiera, Patrick and Kate.
Ray is a member of the ETSU Foundation and was a member of the ETSU National Alumni Association board of directors. He recently participated in the ETSU Committee of 125 in Athletics.
