Mr. Hughes, a Carter County native, attended high school in Elizabethton. In addition to receiving his B.S. degree from ETSU, he did graduate work in business management and taught evening courses at the University. He served as a two-term President of the Alumni Association, President of the Pirate Club, and was instrumental in establishing the ETSU Sports Hall of Fame. Ted has served his community on various committees and served as a member of the Steering Committee for the acquisition of the medical school at ETSU. His honors include the Lewis Sharp Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to Tennessee Young Farmers and Homemakers, Jaycee of the Year (1968-69) and Johnson City Young Man of the Year (1970). His contributions have been noted in Outstanding Young Men, Outstanding Community Leaders, Personalities of the South and Young Men of America.
