Dr. Carrier, a native of Bluff City, holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. Dr. Carrier served as president of the student body during his senior year at ETSU. After completion of his doctoral degree at the University of Illinois, he was associate professor of economics at the University of Mississippi. He was affiliated with Memphis State University as professor of economics, Director, Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs. In 1971, he became President of James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va. He served as past Chairman of the Governor's Electricity Cost Commission and Chairman of the Virginia Land Use Advisory Committee. He is a trustee of several academic and philanthropic organizations, and a member of boards of directors of a number of financial associations and corporations. He is also the author of a book, numerous articles and a monograph.
