After receiving his bachelor's degree, Mr. Shanks became principal of a 12-grade school, Ottway, in his native Greene County. Two years later, Mr. Shanks was named Dean of Students at Washington College Academy. He left education to enter the business world and became the first ETSU graduate hired by IBM Corporation. He now serves as chairman and chief executive officer for American General Life and Accident Insurance Co., the largest insurance company housed in Tennessee.
