W. Cal McGraw '60
1993 Outstanding Alumnus

Mr. McGraw entered ETSU after a tour with the U.S. Navy and earned a football scholarship under Coach Star Wood. After graduation, having learned the fundamentals of electronics and computers in the Navy, he was hired by the Burroughs Corporation in sales. The Olivetti Corporation provided the transition from corporate life to entrepreneurship, engaging him as a consultant for 18 months. During this time he founded McGraw and Associates, to search out software companies that did not have the resources to employ marketing and financial specialists and, in return for fees and equity, to provide those services. In 1980, he modified the plan to provide cash investment so that McGraw and Associates could acquire up to 30 percent of the target company. He has served on the Commission on the Future of ETSU, the Alumni Association Board of Directors, and chaired two search committees to fill football coaching positions. He has hosted several activities of the Atlanta alumni chapter, is a member of the President's Trust and Committee of 1000, the ETSU Foundation, and the advisory boards in the Colleges of Business and Applied Science and Technology.
