JOHNSON CITY (March 15, 2013) – Senior medical students at East Tennessee State University’s James H. Quillen College of Medicine opened their envelopes at noon today during the annual Match Day celebration to learn where they will go for residency training.

The National Resident Matching Program pairs graduating medical students with residency programs throughout the country. Sixty-three members of the Quillen Class of 2013 celebrated a successful match in 13 different specialty or sub-specialty fields at 38 residency sites throughout the United States.

Sixty-eight percent of the Class of 2013 will enter the primary care fields of family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology, and 79 percent of Quillen students will train at institutions in the South. Ten graduates will continue their training in the medical residency programs at Quillen, and 13 additional graduating students matched with other programs in Tennessee.

Quillen students also matched to highly competitive specialty programs that include otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery and radiology. Five students will enter residency training through military service.

Members of the Class of 2013 will attend residency programs at institutions that include the University of Tennessee, Medical University of South Carolina, Wake Forest University, the University of Virginia, the University of Louisville, Tulane University, Ohio State University, Rush University and Mayo School of Medicine. The Quillen College of Medicine residency programs also had a highly successful match.

Graduating medical students will begin residency training programs throughout the country on July 1.
