Event Description
JOHNSON CITY (December 6, 2012) – The American Psychological Association (APA) Commission on Accreditation has granted accreditation to East Tennessee State University’s Ph.D. program concentration in clinical psychology.
ETSU received approval for its doctoral program and clinical concentration in psychology in 2006 with the first incoming class admitted in fall 2007. Since that time, 29 students have been admitted.
In fall 2011, the clinical psychology concentration was highlighted in a report from the Office of Rural Health Policy at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The report, “Rural Behavioral Health Programs and Promising Practices,” discussed ETSU’s unique mission to train psychologists for the rural primary care setting.
ETSU’s clinical psychology concentration was also described as “exemplary” in an article, “The Patient-Centered Medical Home: Unprecedented Workforce Growth Potential for Professional Psychology,” published in Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, a journal of the APA.
“This vote of confidence from APA demonstrates that our clinical psychology training meets the highest standards for preparing new psychologists,” said Dr. Peggy Cantrell, ETSU professor of psychology and Director of Clinical Training.
