Event Description
The ETSU Department of Art & Design and the
Mary B. Martin School of the Arts present Outer Regions: A Roundtable Panel
Discussion on March 1 and 2, 2013.
The
Outer
Regions is a two-day event that aims to locate the current benefits and ramifications
of artists living outside the main art hubs. Art scholars and art professionals
are invited to East Tennessee State University to share their thoughts on these
topics.
Whether to live in or at distance
from a main art hub has been an ongoing discourse among artists. This
project revisits the debate, taking in consideration advances in
technology (i.e. video conferencing, social networking, on-line sales,
web visibility) and current perceptions of urban and non-urban living.
Concluding a series of roundtable discussions, a panel of four art
professionals from around the country will present their research and
will dialogue over what it means to be an artist working at a distance
from New York, LA, Berlin, or London.
Panelists:
Emma Balazs, Director of Visual Arts, Columbia University
Sarrita Hunn, co-founder and managing editor of Temporary Art Review
Adelheid Mers, Associate Professor, Arts Administration and Policy, School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Joey Orr, Arts & Sciences Fellow, Graduate Institute of Liberal Arts, Emory University
The roundtable topics will
be held at the Meeting Room 3, D.P. Culp Center on March 1 and 2 with focus on
the following subjects: WWW, Local production, Altered Institutions and
Radical Habitats. The public panel discussion will be held on March 2 from
6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ball Hall Auditorium and will be moderated by faculty
Mira Gerard.
