JOHNSON CITY (March 15, 2013) – “Inspired by Our Mountains” is the theme of a Composers Forum featuring The New Kubelík Duo at East Tennessee State University Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mathes Hall auditorium.

This concert by the European duo of violinist René Kubelík and pianist Patrizio Mazzola will be highlighted by a multimedia show inspired by the Säntis mountain of the Swiss Alps, with music by ETSU composer Dr. Maria A. Niederberger and photos by Swiss artist Andreas Husi. The program also features “Fiddle Tunes” by Dr. Phillip Rhodes of Carleton College, a former chairholder of ETSU’s Wayne G. Basler Chair of Excellence for the Integration of the Arts, Rhetoric and Science, and a musical story entitled “The Legend of Waianapanapa Caves” by Nolan Stolz of Las Vegas.

Others whose works will be performed are Dr. Allen Anderson of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Judith Cloud of Northern Arizona University and the late Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974).

Tickets for the concert are $15 for general admission, $5 for seniors and free for students with ID.

During their visit to ETSU, both Kubelík and Mazzola will teach master classes for ETSU music students and other interested musicians. Mazzola’s piano master class will be Wednesday, March 20, from 5:15-7:15 p.m. in the Mathes Hall auditorium, and Kubelík’s violin master class will be Thursday, March 21, from 4-6 p.m. in room 18A of Mathes Hall.

Kubelík, a member of a famous family of musicians, began his musical education at the age of 4 at the Music School of Prague and went on to graduate in 2000 from the Conservatory of Mannheim, earning honors at renowned competitions along the way. He was appointed leader of the Southwestern Philharmonic Orchestra Constance at Lake Constance, Germany, in 1999, and also began to teach. He has toured not only Germany and the Czech Republic, but also Switzerland, Slovakia, Austria, Spain, Italy, Russia, Japan and other nations.

Mazzola was born near Genoa, Italy, and graduated with honors from the Lucerne Conservatory in Switzerland. He teaches at the music academies of Bern and Lucerne and performs frequently as a soloist and in collaboration with numerous orchestras. He has many CD recordings.
