Event Description Title: What is the IQ of one ant or one simple robot? And what if there are more than one to take the test? Description: In this talk I will show how the collective cognition mechanisms observed in natural systems can be applied to technical appliances that support and serve the human society. I will demonstrate how ant colonies inspired mathematicians to develop new algorithms that allow better planning for scheduling problems, for the global routing of goods in global sales and shipping, as well as for optimizing communication networks. Physical manifestation of such bio-inspired algorithms leads to new design principles of robots, replacing heavy, expensive monolithic robots with whole swarms of small and cheap robots. Finally, I will discuss the benefits and also the drawbacks of these "swarmification" approaches. |
