Event Description

(January 22, 2013) - On Christmas Eve, Damon Balogh, a 10-year-old boy from Bristol, Va., planned to take to the bank a jar containing $113.99 he had saved to purchase a Lionel train.

When his family stopped at a Kingsport restaurant for lunch, Damon heard from a waitress that one of her co-workers had lost most of her family’s belongings and Christmas presents in a fire.

Damon promptly retrieved his jar of cash from the car and presented it to the victim so she could provide a better Christmas for her children.

In appreciation of his act of kindness, Damon was invited to East Tennessee State University’s George L. Carter Railroad Museum. Jim Pahris, vice president of the George L. Carter Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, hosted a tour for Damon, and the boy was presented with an engineer’s hat and railroad memorabilia, as well as two tickets for the museum-sponsored excursion for a train ride on the Three Rivers Rambler in Knoxville and a visit to the Knoxville Zoo.
