Groups. Culture. Society.
Sociologists and anthropologists are investigators. They study the social interactions of humans in the present and the past and look for common denominators that help us all understand each other better. With subject matter ranging from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from organized crime to religious cults; from the divisions of race, gender, and social class to the shared beliefs of cultures in the U.S. and around the world; from work to medicine and sports, sociology and anthropology are foundations for many exciting career choices. Because these fields address the most challenging issues of our time, they are rapidly expanding and have increasing relevance in world affairs.
An undergraduate degree in sociology prepares you for careers in fields such as journalism, politics, public relations, business or public administration. It is also an important major for those interested in law, education, medicine, social work, and counseling. Common to all these career choices is the commitment to understand human relationships in every kind of social group. In today’s highly competitive job market, a degree in sociology offers an advantage over other liberal arts majors – the knowledge of key social factors and a firm grasp of research design and methods. The sociology program at ETSU also prepares you for graduate work in sociology at ETSU or other universities. With an emphasis on research and theory, ETSU graduate sociology training will increase your opportunities and competitive advantage in the areas of education, research, and applied sociology.
Anthropology, a minor offered at ETSU, provides you with a fundamental perspective to understand cultural diversity, human biological and cultural evolution, the dynamic relationship between biology and culture, and social roles and institutions from a cross-cultural perspective. The knowledge you obtain from a minor in anthropology will not just further your education. It will expand your world. A minor in anthropology is also an excellent enhancement to an undergraduate degree in sociology.
Understanding social behavior and applying it to everyday life. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at ETSU is where it all starts.
