Dear Arts and Sciences Major:
East Tennessee State University is committed to helping you be successful and to achieve good academic standing. According to our records, you are currently on academic probation. ETSU’s Academic Probation and Retention Standards are shown below.
Any student who does not during any semester attain an overall GPA at or above the level indicated for the number of credits attempted will be placed on academic probation for the next term (including summer) of enrollment.
Academic Probation and Retention Standards
| Cumulative quality credits attempted |
Required cumulative GPA |
| 0 - 29 |
1.4 |
| 29.1 - 45 |
1.7 |
| 45.1 - 59.9 |
1.9 |
| 60+ |
2.0 |
Therefore, you must earn a 2.0 for this term or maintain the required retention standard for the number of quality credits attempted or you will be suspended from ETSU (one major term). If you earn a 2.0 you will not be suspended this term but you will remain on probation until the Academic Probation Retention Standards are met (see above).
The following services and success strategies may be helpful to you:
- Meet with your departmental advisor to discuss your academic progress
- Review your transcript and repeat courses that you have failed (which replaces the initial grade in your GPA—subsequent repeats will be averaged together to replace the initial grade)
- Use the free tutoring available at University Tutoring Services (423-439-4758 or http://www.etsu.edu/scs/uts/)
- Make adjustments in your class schedule if appropriate. Remember that students on probation may not enroll for more than 13 hours, except with the approval of the advisor and college/school dean.
- Talk directly with your professor about your grade in a course
- Request accommodations for disability if applicable
Please call Paula Sarut or Chase Stewart, advisors for the College of Arts and Sciences at (423) 439.5246 if you have any questions. I hope this has clarified the academic probation and retention standards for you. We wish you success in your academic pursuits.
Sincerely,
Paula and Chase, Advisor
